Main problem for black is the unusual idea 1....c5 2. g4!? exposing whites queen along the diagonal. According to SF black is in trouble unless either 2....Nd6!? or 2....h5!? So the moral of the story is, if white plays unconventionally, sometimes black should respond unconventionally too. Note: Carlson found a very similar idea in the 2022 chess960 world championship. However...
Scharnagl's numeric naming system for FRC-chess960 setups partly misses the target.

The only purpose of these numeric names is to help humans verbally communicate with terms short enough to pronounce. In a conversation, repeatedly saying aloud "549" is much easier than repeating "R N B B K N Q R".
Now consider...

The reciprocal of "RNBBKNQR" is "RQNKBBNR". Stated in a way that is easier to say aloud, the reciprocal of S# "549" is "(what?)".
Notice that you have to refer to some tool or long list to answer that simple question!

A better numeric naming system would create an easy/obvious relationship between reciprocals.

One possible strategy is to have them differ by exactly 500. For example, the setups 201 and 701 would be reciprocals.

Another strategy would prefix the number with either 'A' or 'H' to signify which wing of the board the king starts on. Because column-e is on the 'H' wing, and because in the traditional setup S#518 the king starts on column-e and thus on the 'H' wing, the traditional setup would be named H518, not A518 (not the best example, but the A H idea is explained).

By the way, in FEN notation, the old castling-still-available codes of QqKk should be supported but formally Deprecated, in favor of the more flexible/expressive AaHh.

Thanks, GeneM, 2011/Oct/16
CastleLong.comGeneMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17760103001033379456noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3261331525837592732.post-75987723167325492322011-09-19T10:15:58.002-07:002011-09-19T10:15:58.002-07:00It worked!
